Deformation of the North American Plate Interior from a Decade of Continuous GPS Measurements

چکیده
A combination of two independent geodetic solutions using data from close to 300 continuous GPS stations covering the central and eastern U.S. shows that surface deformation in the North American plate interior is best fit by a model that includes rigid rotation of North America with respect to ITRF2000 and a component of strain qualitatively consistent with that expected from Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). After correcting for the North American plate motion, residual horizontal velocities show a north-to-south deformation gradient of ∼1 mm yr−1, mostly localized between 1000 and 2200 km from the GIA center, corresponding to strain rates of about 10−9 yr−1. At distances farther than 2100 km from the GIA center, horizontal residual velocities are random with no evidence for regions of elevated strain rates. In particular, we find no detectable residual motion at the 95% confidence level in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where the average weighted misfit of 0.7 mm yr−1 is the same as the weighted misfit of our rigid plate model. Vertical velocities show (1) a maximum uplift rate of 10 mm yr−1 at the assumed GIA center, (2) a hinge line located 1500 km from that center, and (3) a subsidence rate up to 1.4 mm yr−1 in the forebulge, with a maximum located about 2000 km from the GIA center. Our results have the potential to better constrain Glacial Isostatic Adjustment models and contribute to a better definition of stable North America for tectonic and geodetic applications.

Oblique collision in the northeastern Caribbean from GPS measurements and geological observations
[1] Previous Caribbean GPS studies have shown that the rigid interior of the Caribbean plate is moving eastnortheastward (070 ) at a rate of 18–20 ± 3 mm/yr relative to North America. This direction implies maximum oblique convergence between the island of Hispaniola on the Caribbean plate and the 22–27-kmthick crust of the Bahama carbonate platform on the adjacent North America plate. We prese...
متن کاملSpatio-Temporal Mapping of Plate Boundary Faults in California Using Geodetic Imaging
The Pacific–North American plate boundary in California is composed of a 400-km-wide network of faults and zones of distributed deformation. Earthquakes, even large ones, can occur along individual or combinations of faults within the larger plate boundary system. While research often focuses on the primary and secondary faults, holistic study of the plate boundary is required to answer several...
متن کاملGPS geodetic constraints on Caribbean - North America plate motion
We describe a model for Caribbean plate motion based on GPS velocities of four sites in the plate interior and two azimuths of the Swan Islands transform fault. The data are well fit by a single angular velocity, with average misfits approximately equal to the 1.5-3.0 mm yr -• velocity uncertainties. The new model predicts Caribbean-North America motion -65% faster than predicted by NUVEL-1A, a...
متن کاملPeriodic slow earthquakes from the Cascadia subduction zone.
Continuous geodetic measurements from convergent margins have shown that deep transient creep events can release large amounts of strain energy without detectable seismic shaking, and they are thus known as slow or silent earthquakes. Because subduction zones generate the largest earthquakes, seismic hazard assessment relies on understanding the degree to which slow earthquakes reduce the energ...
متن کاملBlock modeling of crustal deformation of the northern Walker Lane and Basin and Range from GPS velocities
[1] We infer rates of crustal deformation in the northern Walker Lane (NWL) and western Basin and Range using data from the Mobile Array of GPS for Nevada transtension, and other continuous GPS networks including the EarthScope Plate Boundary Observatory. We present 224 new GPS velocities, correct them for the effects of viscoelastic postseismic relaxation, and use them to constrain a block mod...
